Joyce Vinson

Joyce Vinson, of Greenport and New York City, died peacefully on May 13, 2016 at her home on the Upper West Side. After running the famed Electric Circus disco in the 1960s, Joyce became the manager of Mother Courage restaurant for six years in the 1970s, welcoming women from around the country and the world through its doors.

A pioneer lesbian therapist both on Long Island and in NYC starting in the early 1980s, she reached out to and helped many women from all backgrounds—lesbian, straight and questioning—during her more than 35 years of practice.

Vivacious, kind and generous of spirit, Joyce will be dearly missed by her spouse, Marsha Lipsitz, her sister, Judy, her two nieces, Hillary and Renee, and her many friends on both the North and South Forks.
