This month the NFWFWF Board had its annual meeting with the Advisory Council. The meeting was well attended and an open and productive conversation about the past, present and future of NFWFWF was had. Click here to see a chart of historical grant giving throughout the past sixteen years.

The Anne MacKay Scholarship Fund Committee has interviewed finalists and decided on the awardees. The two awardees who were selected are outstanding young women who have faced discrimination in their high schools and worked to bring better diversity to their high schools. The Scholarship is funded by donations specifically earmarked for that purpose.

As many of you will remember, one NFWFWF’s main objectives this Spring has been increased community outreach – to insure that any lesbian on the North Fork who needs assistance is aware of the services NFWFWF can provide. We have placed an advertisement in the Suffolk Times and we have conducted outreach to medical providers and social service providers. Our presence in the community at large has grown. As a result, we have given grants to lesbians from Riverhead to Orient, from former board members in need to a former service member who needed assistance. Our reach has grown and now, so have the numbers of grants. This, of course, is a double edged sword.

In the first four months of 2016, NFWFWF has given out $22,660 in seven (7) grants. This amount is $5000, and two grants, more than we gave out during all of 2015. The need in our community has grown as our members age and face the issues associated with aging, including loss of partners, health issues, disability issues, dementia, loss of mobility and illness. We are a unique organization as we were founded by the lesbian community, for the benefit of the community, operated by the community volunteers and supported by the community. The amount of help that NFWFWF can provide to the community is limited solely by the amount of financial support that we receive from our community.

NFWFWF is currently investigating the possibility of applying for grants to help boost our fundraising, but until that time comes, we are dependent upon you, our community for financial support. We want to continue helping those who are in need, so we are asking for your help. We have almost 600 households on our email list. If half of you donate just $30, that would enable us to award three more grants of $3000 each. Please consider giving – any small amount helps us to help your community. Every dollar that we raise during this fundraising push will go directly to grants. This is your opportunity to help your sisters in need. Please consider giving by donating here.

We have several events coming up – the Gay Pride Event will be held on Saturday, June 25th, we will be having a legal clinic in July, our Annual Tennis event, Golf Events and, of course, the Jan Swanson Auction. These events are not only opportunities for us to get together and enjoy each others company – they are also fundraisers, raising money to enable NFWFWF to help our community members. Consider becoming a sponsor at the events if you are able, the extra funds go a long way to support the organization. If you cannot attend, consider donating money anyway. Of course, if you cannot afford to pay the entrance fee at any event, please call us at (631) 477-8464 or send me an email by clicking here. We have never and will never turn a community member away.

I hope to see many of you on June 25th.
