Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer because August is a big month for NFWFWF as we are working hard to prepare for our 28th Annual Janet T. Swanson Summer Sunset Benefit on Saturday, August 31st. This year’s event will be held at the Wharf House in Southold overlooking the Peconic Bay with beautiful views of sunsets and Shelter Island. For 28 years this event has been instrumental in helping us raise funds that affords us the ability to provide multiple grants per year to lesbians in need on the Northfork.
There will be a silent auction again this year where you can bid on wonderful items and experiences at various price points. Later in the evening we will have a popular music playlist available so we can have our annual dance tribute to our beloved Edie Windsor.
Also, again for 2019, we will hold our cash raffle where the grand prize is $10,000 cash. Second prize of $2,500, not to mention three prizes of $500 each! The best part about this raffle are the odds because we are only selling 300 raffles. So there is a 5 in 300 chance you may be a winner if you are holding a raffle ticket.
What will be different this year is our food and entertainment. This year we are working with a new caterer and staff who will provide us with delicious food for the evening.
Our live musical entertainment will be provided by singer songwriter, Treya Lam. Treya is a classically trained multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. The Village Voice was quoted saying that Treya Lam, “draws you in, hypnotizes you and all at once you’ll get taken up by a huge tide, a swell that takes you over completely.
It is shaping up to be a wonderful event and I look forward to sharing the evening with all of you. It’s a great event to spend with old friends and make new ones. This event was one of my first introductions to NFWFWF many years ago and it holds a special place in my heart.
Also happening in August, our organization will be recognized at the Southold Democrats Annual Gala in Jamesport on August 18th. NFWFWF was notified a few weeks ago that we will be honored at their event for our many years of community service and outreach. We are honored to be selected for our good works and are humbled by the recognition.
I hope to see you all soon around town and certainly at the Summer Sunset on the 31st.
