Joyce Culver is a photographer and educator living in Greenport, New York. Her early portraits, primarily of lesbian couples and gay men in the 1980’s and 90’s served as ways for her to get in touch with her community and, as she states, “Look at what a relationship and love might look like” in a photograph. In her forty-year career residing in NYC she shot hundreds of celebrity portraits for the 92Y in the privacy of the Green Room and on stage, as well as documenting her friends, partners, and NYC life.

Simultaneous projects such as a “A Change of Mind: An Alzheimer’s Portrait” lamented the decline of her father, culminating in an exhibition at the Albuquerque Museum of Art, NM. Her portrait of Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Nina Totenberg recently appeared on the cover of “Dinners with Ruth” published in 2022 by Simon and Shuster. Culver also taught creative courses in photography at the School of Visual Arts, Nassau Community College, and chaired the photography program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Permanent collections include: the Amon Carter Museum, MOMA, Albuquerque Museum of Art, The International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House, and are in numerous private collections. Publications include: Fashion Icons, The Arc of Love, Butch/Femme, Forbes, Fortune, Newsday, The New York Times, and Art News, among others.
